Olympic fever dominates the headlines this week, especially as the Opening Ceremonies come our way tonight. Will Michael Phelps maintain his Olympic domination, or will Ryan Lochte overtake Phelps in this year’s competition?

But what else is happening around the world? Here are this week’s stories, excavated from page 7a:

  • Using Text Messages: The Philippines, the country that is most prone to natural disasters, is increasingly utilizing SMS text messages to alert and coordinate emergency response workers
  • What is Ghana’s future? Ghana has largely been viewed as an African success story for its two decades of progress and growth. But what will happen now that President John Atta Mills has passed away?
  • Seeking Asylum: The Olympic Games have a history of political defectors seeking asylum, and this year has already begun as a Sudanese runner walked into a London police station seeking political asylum.
  • Flooding in Beijing: Severe flooding in China has left an estimated 77 dead, nearly twice the number that was quoted earlier this week.
  • Clearing out of Camps: The number of people displaced by Haiti’s 2010 earthquake has dropped from 1.5 million to under 400,000 as people are moving out of camps and into longer-term housing. But many challenges remain in the rebuilding.
